The "Hikari Germ"Most of us are aware of the bacterial action that takes place in our own digestive systems. We as humans carry around a considerable number of bacteria that live inside us, and contributing to our digestive processes. Koi are no different and in the same way that yoghurt is a source of beneficial bacteria for humans, so the "Hikari Germ" is a source of beneficial bacteria to Koi. The Hikari Germ is in fact a patented living probiotic developed and researched in the Hikari labs in Japan at their own Yamasaki Koi farm. It is a strain of Bacillus bacteria which when fed to Koi, proliferates itself in the intestine of the Koi and offering the Koi many benefits. There are four basic stages in the "operation" of this wonder bug. In Stage one, the Hikari Germ is ingested by the Koi which triggers its arousal from a state of dormancy (in the Koi food). In Stage Two the Hikari Germs creates beneficial digestive enzymes that help and aid the digestive capacity of the Koi. In Stage 3 the Hikari Germ manages to help prevent the proliferation of bad bacteria in the Koi, thereby reducing the chances of disease or illness. In Stage 4 discharged wastes being highly decomposed by the continued (but temporary) actions of the Hikari Germ. This process helps improve the water quality while reducing the load on filter systems (and thereby also reducing maintenance). In fact, over a test period of 18 days involving 30 Koi of age less than one year being fed 2% of their body weight per day, Saki Hikari Koi food produced just under half the volume of solid raw waste when compared to ordinary common Koi food...
